In 1988, Tom Blake gave up the big headaches of the corporate world to make big sandwiches. He opened Tutor & Spunky's Deli in Dana Point, California. In 1990, Dana Point became a city. The deli grew as the city grew. For the next 26 years, Tom managed and guided the deli into a $1,000,000 yearly sales business. During that timeframe, he hired 186 employees. The deli was known by customers as "The Cheers" of Dana Point.The book describes the employees, customers, and celebrities who visited. During that time, Tom also became a successful newspaper columnist; he describes the challenges of managing and growing a deli while writing more than 3,000 newspaper columns and publishing four books. Three were on the topic of dating after 50 and the fourth book was a memoir about a San Francisco-based restaurant chain titled, "Prime Rib & Boxcars. Whatever Happened to Victoria Station?When a woman customer named Greta came into the deli in 1998 and ordered a freshly squeezed carrot juice, Tom noticed her while she waited for her juice to be prepared. He walked around the counter and said to her, "Would you like to have dinner with me?" Tom and Greta have been together since.Tom and Greta, were able to take some incredible trips to Europe, South America, and throughout the United States, and travel to New York City where Tom appeared on the Today show and Good Morning America, while his capable staff held down the fort.The book weaves in important events that affected the deli such as the Dana Point Post Office shooting, the fires that decimated Laguna Beach, the local bank heists, the yacht Ponzi scheme by a well-known customer, the murder of former Dana Point resident Nicole Brown Simpson, former wife of O.J. Simpson, the implementation of a Dana Point Town Center plan that forced the deli to relocate and the never-ending issues, challenges, and rewards of dealing with employees.Tom also had to deal with his former son-in-law, Joey McStay's, and Joey's wife and two children's disappearance and murders. Joey had worked at the deli when he was younger. Details of that are included in the book.People who dream of someday owning a restaurant will benefit from reading the book.
